YAHWEH'S WORD

If we consider the terms used by the prophets themselves, as mentioned above, and the stock fornulla used by the collectors of their utterances to indicate their prophetic inspiration, that is "Yahweh's word came to so-and-so," there can he no doubt that the basic reality that made the reforming prophets so certain of their call was the teorrl ol)WIlueh (debar they feel that they are in possession of Yahweh's word 0'"16:5-13; her 1:9; 5:14; 15:19; 2o:); I hgs 17:2:1), unlike the common nc'bi'im who "will become wind; the word is not in them" (ter 5:13a) on account of their false predictions of prosperity. Jeremiah again uses the word rim/i for the "nothingness" that these rnebi'i o will become, almost certainly with intentional allusion to the spirit-Wien. It is tI He. Of course, that the older nebi'i/o spoke of having the "word" in then]; compare the obviously colloquial saying in ter I8:18: "the law (lor(1h) shall not perish front the priest, nor counsel ('esnh) from the wise, nor the word (clobor) from the prophet." [lilt this idea only acquired paramount importance in the reforming prophets.

What, then, is the prophets' conception ofYahweh's word?" In the first place a "word" in general did not mean to the ancient Israelite what we understand by a "mere word." The word is active, and it is filled with the speaker's "mental content"; his feelings, thoughts, and will issue in a word, which is also an act. One thinks "words" and does "words." Yahweh's word is also an action. It is a real active force, a potency that Yahweh can "send forth" and that can "descend upon" a people with devastating effect (Isa 9:7).
